Active Release Techniques® (ART) treatment is a hands-on case-management system that allows us to diagnose and treat soft tissue injuries. This technique is a movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. These conditions are a few of the many conditions that can be treated and healed with ART: headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow.
ART is applied to acute conditions, chronic, overuse, and repetitive strain injuries. These conditions can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area(s). This scar tissue prevents other tissues and/or other related structures to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This in turn may cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness. An ART session will most likely involve a combination of examination and treatment. We will evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. ART helps us identify and correct specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. It is not a cookie-cutter approach and is specific to each patient’s needs.
ART is currently used by numerous NFL teams, professional runners, Ironman professionals and many other highly accomplished professional and collegiate athletes.
